Offering one of the most in-depth experiences ever, Planet Coaster is a rollercoaster theme park tycoon where you’ll not only get to obsess over every tiny detail of your ideal theme park; you’ll get to manage your staff as well as your park’s finances, build your own mega rollercoasters and “ride” it in first person (seat view), and to generally provide the best possible theme park experience to your visitors!
There are many ways you can play Planet Coaster – with its Career mode, you’ll get to start with a pre-built theme park and learn your way around the game with increasingly difficult goals while the Sandbox mode lets you build your rollercoaster theme park literally from the ground up. Challenges, on the other hand, are more like a difficult version of Career mode where you’ll be required to complete the challenge provided with very limited resources and some restrictions.
Naturally, like any good theme park tycoon, you have a ton of options in this game, ranging from the insane number and variety of rides to the equally huge selection of shops and decorations. However, instead of giving you access to everything from the start, most game modes will require you to divert some of your profits into research just so you can “discover” new types of rides, shops and etc. As long as you don’t forget to assign up to 3 kinds of research at a time, you should be able to unlock new items at a pretty reasonable pace.
Considering that the visitors to your parks are your, for the lack of a more poignant term, “cash cows”, you’ll need to make sure that their every need is met. This means providing enough facilities like toilets, shops that sell food and beverages, as well as souvenirs, rubbish bins, benches, nice décor (including natural décor like trees, bushes, flowers and the like) and more. Also, note that decorations will enhance the attractiveness of a ride, so you’ll want to make sure you’ve got plenty to go around.
Funnily enough, there are plenty of "logistics" to consider in this game, from where to position your ride entrances and exits just so you can cut down on the waiting period when the previous passengers are exiting and the new passengers are entering the ride area. Having a queueing path that's too short may make your visitors grumble too! So, you'll really need to learn what works and what doesn't in order to really create a successful theme park.
You can even design and build your rollercoaster piece by piece from the ground up in this game! Physics do come into play here but generally, the game tries to keep things easy enough to understand, even for the newer players, and yet offers sufficient depth for the veterans to have fun tinkering around with.
Want to give your rollercoaster a ride yourself? Well, the game provides three types of “camera views” that you can use to enjoy a ride. You can watch the ride from a third person perspective (you can still rotate the camera though), in first person (front row seats!), or cinematic mode.
Being a tycoon game, Planet Coaster isn’t just all about building amazing rollercoasters that will make your stomach churn… oh no! It is very management-oriented as well. As the owner of the theme park, you’ll need to make sure you hire enough staff to run your park efficiently and manage them to the best of your ability. This means sending them where most work needs to be done, making sure to invest in their personal development so as to allow them to do their respective jobs better, and of course, giving pay increases as necessary.
Similar to the more recent rollercoaster tycoons, Planet Coaster is also a very social game. Besides being able to discuss about your parks and how to design the ultimate coaster in discussion boards and forums, you actually get to share your most magnificent theme parks with the world. In return, you’ll also get to enjoy playing the many creations lovingly designed by other players as well. It’s a pretty huge win-win, giving the game almost unlimited replayability… at least until you tire of building coasters and want to play something else.
For a modern rollercoaster tycoon, Planet Coaster has some fantastic graphics. Even at night, you can decorate your theme park with various colored spotlights and neon signs to make it look vibrant and lively. In terms of sound, I love the ambiance in this game. When your park is crowded, you can actually “hear” that it’s crowded. Of course, the visitors who go on your rides aren’t expressionless robots either – they will whoop and yell as the rollercoaster dives down a steep slope. The catchy tune that plays at the menu is really nice to listen to as well.
If you love theme park tycoons like the Rollercoaster Tycoon series, you’ll definitely love Planet Coaster! The game takes all the best elements from the genre’s preceding games and adds many improvements to them, including but not limited to modern graphics, in-depth park management systems, a detailed yet easy-enough-to-learn custom coaster builder, and many more. The game’s social too, allowing you to experience other players’ creations while letting you upload your own. Definitely worth spending hours building the ideal theme park, especially if you get to share it with the world! Planet Coaster Summary
