Ghost Town is a mobile game that shares the same core mechanic of classic adventure RPGs like Zelda. However, instead of battling orcs and monsters, you deal with something simpler: a woman who is capable of seeing ghosts. The unusual story makes it accessible to a lot more people who like their casual games to be short but still entertaining.
In the game you play as Anna, a person capable of talking to ghosts. The namesake of the game is basically a line of various houses owned by particular characters you meet along the way. Players enter each of the houses, and that is where the dungeon crawling mechanic begins.
Players start in a single room illuminated by Anna’s wand. You can get rid of shrubbery or other debris that have overtaken the houses as they have not been occupied for a long time. Certain doors can be unlocked, leading to other rooms that, once the debris is cleared, may contain collectibles and clues to complete a mission.
Rooms are pre-mapped, so there are no procedurally generated rooms or even random encounters, which in itself is an advantage for casual gamers since it is completely possible to complete a mission more quickly.
It is very important to perform house cleaning as often as possible as you could end up finding the items that you need to complete certain objectives per house. In the earlier levels, you are tasked to look for certain items that are related to the owner of the house. Once you find all materials, another objective may appear that is related to that subplot.
Moving from one house to another to perform essentially the same mechanic does not feel repetitive since there is a cohesive story tying one house to the other. Perhaps because this a ghost town, all the characters you encounter are ghosts, roaming the world forever perhaps due to tasks that need to completely before passing on. Anna tries to help the ghosts, and in turn, another clue is provided to solve the overarching mystery she is investigating.
The art style could be better since the vistas and illustrations show a lot of promise. The in-game graphics, though, does not have the same sheen. Animations are very fluid. Anna’s 3d sprites react accordingly to the player’s commands using various actions.
Hitting the targets needs a tad more getting used to even for a larger tablet as players may encounter “dead end” messages when you just want to clear debris. The size of the world is very vast, which probably is the reason why there is a need for a constant Internet connection, aside from social media integration and online transactions.
Another house means another loading screen, but this should only take a couple of seconds depending on your subscription. As soon as it is loaded, you are once again exploring rooms and inching closer to completing the game. Ghost Town Adventures Summary
