If you’re new to the game, however, you need play the first one although you’re totally welcome to do so. You don’t need the prior knowledge because you are guided by the AI, at least at the beginning, as to what you need to do in order to make your city progress.
To do that, you will need to focus on a few things - resident happiness, population, power and employment.
As you’ll find out at the start of the game, you will need to build residences in order to invite people to live in your city. Each type of residence can accommodate a specific number of people, but you can always upgrade this if you’re lacking space.
Of course, you have to support your residence so they can earn money for themselves and for your city in the form of taxes. You will need to build Commerce buildings, like an Animal Farm, a Beach Bar, a Shopping Center, and many others.
At some point, your people will become unhappy. You need to keep up the Happiness, and the only way you can do that is to build additional Community buildings like the Library, or even decorations like a Park, Palm Trees, and many others.
The more your city grows, the more power it’s going to need. That’s why you need to build facilities like a Coal Plant, a Windmill, an Electric Plant, and many others.
Finally, you will need to ensure long range transportation for your citizens. You can build a railroad, and a train station for that. You can also build roads, canals, walkways and many others around structures as you fit, although it’s necessary for community, residence and commerce buildings to be located next to roads.
All in all, the mechanics in City Island 2 are pretty straightforward. However, the game still gives you a lot of free rein in the designing and placement of various buildings and decorations in your city.
